Vertumnus Cattleheart — Parides vertumnus
Possessing a velvety black texture and brilliant rose-pink spots, the Vertumnus Cattleheart is a masterwork of natural contrast.
About this species
Parides vertumnus, the Vertumnus Cattleheart, is a member of the swallowtail family widely distributed in the Amazon basin. Like other members of the Parides genus, it is known for its toxic compounds obtained from its larval host plants (Aristolochia).
This species features deep velvety black wings with brilliant pink markings on the hindwings. It is a smaller but more delicate representative than its larger relatives in the Papilio genus. It often flies close to the forest floor in the deep shade of the rainforest.
