Clytemnestra Leafwing — Fountainea clytemnestra
Possessing some of the most vibrant red markings in the Nymphalidae family, the Clytemnestra Leafwing is an icon of the Neotropics.
About this species
Fountainea clytemnestra, also known as the Clytemnestra Leafwing or Anaea clytemnestra, is a medium-sized butterfly from the Nymphalidae family native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is particularly common in the lowland forests of Peru.
This species is characterized by its primarily red-brown wings with black vertical bands or margins. Like other members of the leafwing tribe, the underside of its wings provides incredible camouflage by mimicking the appearance of a dead leaf, complete with a dark midrib line.
