About this species
Memphis arginusa, also known as the Arginusa Leafwing or Anaea arginusa, is a member of the leafwing group of butterflies from South America. This genus is famous for its incredible camouflage, as the underside of its wings almost perfectly resembles a dead leaf, helping it hide from predators on the forest floor.
The wing surfaces are primarily reddish-brown or dark blackish on the dorsal side, while the ventral side is specialized for crypsis with patterns that mimic leaf veins and brown spots. It is a highly sought-after specimen for scientific studies and decorative collections due to its rarity and unique shape.
